Fire Captain Kelsey spoke to us about the need to have a personal Wildfire Action Plan, which is downloadable from the Los Angeles County Fire Department website, https://fire.lacounty.gov. The County Fire Department has 9 divisions to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS), fire and rescue services. The 4 cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the neighboring cities in the South Bay area are served by Division 1, with 10 Fire Stations including the Battalion Headquarters on Indian Peak Rd in RHE.
Los Angeles County had 2 major suburban wildfires this year, related to our changing climate creating increased risks at the “wildland-urban interface areas”, potentially a year-round risk now. Wildfires are fueled by buildup of seasonal dry vegetation and driven by dry conditions in locally strong winds. Very few residents have properly prepared for evacuation until it is too late.
Fuel modification is an important preparation in the vicinity of residential structures. Vines, climbing plants, bushes and overhanging tree branches, combined with accumulated plant material on the ground and in rain gutters, should be cleared adequately, especially dead or dying vegetation. High-fire-hazard plants include eucalyptus, palms, pines, junipers and pampas grass. Chimney outlets should be covered with a non-flammable metal mesh screen to prevent escaping embers from igniting a fire. Vent openings and attic vents should also be covered with metal mesh to prevent entry of flying embers. Fire extinguishers, garden hoses, and some garden tools can be useful in impending fire emergencies. Wildfire heat can cause windows to break even before the home ignites, allowing burning embers to enter and start internal fires. Dual-paned windows with tempered glass on the outside reduce the chance of fire-breakage.
Every family should prepare a fire-emergency action plan, including a communications plan, emergency contact numbers, an emergency supply kit, and a designated emergency meeting location outside the hazard area. All family members including pets should be enabled to evacuate on short notice. In the event of fire, leaving early gives the best chance of survival and keeps roads clear of congestion for firefighters. Survival tips were discussed if you become trapped in your home, in your vehicle, or on foot. Do not return after a fire until officials determine that it is safe, and be alert for downed power lines and other hazards. Download the “Ready! Set!
