Larry Andrews opened the program with a skit by Jason Sluyter and Megan Lyne (2 actors from the Norris Theatre, whom Larry had provided with dinner in the adjacent room as payment for this work).  It began with Russ Schaadt opening the door to the other dining area to let the 2 actors into our meeting.  They acted as “uninvited visitors”, with Jason grabbing some taco chips from a table on his way in.  They sat down at a front table to eat, and had a dialogue with Larry at the podium about the process of becoming Rotary members.

Larry told them, “This is a private dinner meeting.  We are a service club and a private organization.  You have to be invited to join us; you can’t just barge in here like that!”  This dialogue continued as Larry explained to them the requirements of membership and the process of joining Rotary.  Then, Larry introduced them as actors, and they made their bows and departed.

Larry went on to discuss the changes in the membership process for this year as recommended by RI and the District.  We’re looking for quality membership, of people who will participate in our club activities, and also member retention.  This process needs a Membership Committee (the entire Club).  He listed important steps starting with identifying prospective members and informing them about Rotary and our Club.  The sponsor introduces the prospective member to the Club members, and we will have a small breakfast meeting with each new member to discuss our expectations of membership.  After induction, each new member should be integrated into a Club Committee to begin active involvement.

We have new Prospective Membership folders this year, with our Club group photo on front and the caption “There’s a place for you in our picture!”  The folder lists opportunities for providing service to others, promoting integrity and advancing world understanding and goodwill.  We network with area professionals, enjoy outstanding dinners, hear presentations on interesting topics, and provide leadership in executing worthwhile projects.
