For the past 2 years, over 12 Rotary Clubs have come together on a project to make meals for the less fortunate in developing parts of the world that struggle with hunger: Rise Against Hunger. It is a great hands-on project for our Club, family and friends, Interactors and Rotaractors.
Rise Against Hunger is a 501 (c) (3) charitable nonprofit. They (for a cost of $.34cents per meal) bring bulk quantities or rice, soy, dehydrated vegetable and vitamin and mineral packets, and all the bags, boxes, scales, and machines to seal the plastic bags (each bag is a meal for 6 people). The 34 cents also includes the cost of their administration and shipping of the food all over the world. Rotary's job is raise the money and provide volunteers to do the packaging.
One of the great things they do with this food is sending it to schools in developing nations. The parents have an incentive to send their children to school and the children are motivated to go because they know they will get a good meal. Education is the fastest way to break the cycle of poverty.
